Stockport is a large town in Greater Manchester, 7 miles south-east of Manchester city centre where the River Goyt and Tame merge to create the River Mersey. Stockport’s predominant industry of the 19th century was textiles, becoming the centre of the country’s hatting industry exporting more than 6 million hats a year; the last hat works in Stockport closed in 1997.  The county covers areas of the town from the Heaton’s in the north, Cheadle and  Cheadle Hulme to the west. Romiley and Woodley to the east with Marple & Hazel Grove to the south.
