Please note: The other dates on the application form for the selection and briefing weekend remain the same, so you must be available for the Briefing/selection Day on 2nd
September 2017, and the first planning meeting on the weekend of 12th- 14th January 2018. You should have been a member of the Trefoil Guild for at least a year before applying to join the TOPAZ project.
It's never too late!
When I was a young Guider, International camp group leaders were expected to be over 35. By the time I was 35, they were usually under 30, matching the age of European leaders! Did you find yourself in the same situation? Did you take part in GOLD when you were 18-30, and now miss those challenges? Did family or career commitments mean you couldn't be involved? Now's your chance to change that!
Girlguiding focuses on the development of girls and young women so cannot offer a separate programme for adult leaders. The Trefoil Guild - Guiding for Adults - is able to offer our members International opportunities for personal development.
One way is by entering partnerships with International Girl Guide and Girl Scout Associations in joint projects around the world. To help us start quickly, the pilot partnership of TOPAZ - Trefoil Overseas Partnership. Adventure with Zest! – is taking within our own WAGGGS Region, where we already have good contacts. With the enthusiastic support of Girlguiding and WAGGGS Europe Region, we have entered a three year partnership with the Russian Association of Girl Scouts (RADS), working with them to expand Girl Scouting into new areas of Russia..
RADS, a full member of WAGGGS, has just celebrated its twentieth anniversary. It has about 1500 members in the world's largest country. Their members are concentrated in a few city regions, and they want to establish their Association in new areas. By working with them on this aim, we hope to increase their numbers.
The first project in 2016 was very successful, travelling almost 2000miles and working in five cities. An eight strong team of Trefoil members planned their project, in conjunction with RADS, during a planning weekend and an overnight spent checking everything, close to their departure. They appeared on Radio and Television talking about Girl Scouting and Guiding and helped raise the profile of RADS. The team was self funded, and the Trefoil Guild is supporting TOPAZ financially in the same way that it supports GOLD groups.
You can take part, even if you are unable to travel. The Russia 2016 team has produced an activity pack for Guilds to use in your programme, giving you a taste of what the group is doing in Russia, and this will continue to be available for the duration of the partnership. If someone in your Country or Region is participating, you could support them by fundraising, perhaps by using the ideas in the pack to organise a Thinking Day event for Girlguiding members in your area.
The overall development of TOPAZ is being undertaken by the Scheme team. The members of this team are currently from South West England, North East England, Midlands and Trefoil Guild in Foreign Countries, but they have a fixed term of office and will be replaced on a staggered rota. If this is something that interests you, please contact you Country/Region Chair to let them know you would like to be considered when it is their turn to nominate a team member.
The Scheme team is looking at different projects which will succeed our Russia partnership in 2019. These are likely to offer the opportunity to work in WAGGGS Regions around the world. Depending on the interest shown by members, it might be possible to offer projects in more than one country.
