Kent East Kenya

Girlguiding Kent East and Kenya Girl Guiding Association Baringo District's Twinning Celebrations.

Alexa Laurence and Chris Martin (LaSER Trefoil Guild members) attended the celebrations of 20 years of Twinning of Kent East and Kenya Girl Guide Association, Baringo District, in July. It was held at their campsite in Kimalel. The first visit to Kimalel was made in February 1995; Alexa and Chris were on that first trip and the next 7 trips, having taken hundreds of members from Kent East to Kimalel. Even more members from all over the Region have raised funds for projects at the campsite. It was good to see the area flourishing due to the various water projects, the last one being the drilling of a borehole within the campsite but also serving the local community and adjoining schools. In 1995 nothing could be grown, the main income was from goat herding. In 2016, maize, vegetables and trees are growing around the campsite; there are birds and butterflies everywhere, people are moving into the area – there’s an incredible difference.

The Rainbows in the photo are entertaining visitors at the 20th anniversary celebrations. They are from the first Rainbow unit in Kenya  which was started in 1997 after their leader attended a meeting of Kenyan Guiders and leaders from Kent East to discuss programmes and ideas for Rainbow meetings.

The water tank pictured was built using money raised by Surrey East  Trefoil Guilds by paying an amount every time they turned on a tap for a week. The tank is still in use collecting rain water from the guttering around the bungalow.

The following day, after an early journey back to Nairobi, Alexa and Chris attended the Opening Ceremony of the Africa Region Conference, a wonderful experience. The photo shows Alexa on the right and Chris on the left with Nicola Grinstead,  Chair of the WAGGGS World Board, and Rose Kioko, outgoing Chair of the Africa Region.
